Seven Miles per Second: New Mixed Media Portraits by Erin Currier
Currier combines post consumer waste, social and political issues, and painting to create powerful works of fine art with a message designed to raise our consciousness…

SANTA FE, N.M [July 23, 2011] – Blue Rain Gallery is proud to announce an arresting new show of mixed media portraits by Erin Currier. Seven Miles per Second will be on exhibit September 2 – 24, 2011 at the Blue Rain Gallery in Santa Fe, NM with an artist reception scheduled for Friday, September 2nd from 5 – 7pm.

Currier’s newest body of work examines the lives of people that live outside the democratic process; those
whose political or economic circumstances have forced them into a life of migration where struggle becomes the central theme. In Currier’s style of merging post consumer waste with fine painting and a desire to seek social and political justice, she has created a powerful show of roughly 20 new mixed media portraits that lure the viewer with layers of collage and a deeply human element in the individuals portrayed. Through our own emotional connection with the individuals portrayed in her pieces, Currier gives us hope that the otherwise disenfranchised and voiceless peoples have a voice after all—and there voice screams through the talented hands of artist Erin Currier’s.

Seven Miles per Second was conceived by the somewhat witty remark of artist David Wojnarowicz: “The minimum speed required to break through the earth’s gravitational pull is seven miles per second—we would have to run awful fast to escape from where we are heading.” Currier’s message is that we are heading toward ultimate destruction, as seven miles per second is an unattainable speed of defiance from the forces pulling our societies and peoples down. The individuals and circumstances portrayed in this newest body of work are meant to shed light on the realities of this grave uphill battle. Do not miss this exciting and charged series—where aesthetic beauty, mastery of process, and social and economic politics come into view on the sam two-dimensional plane!
