Two-Man Show for First Friday at Blue Rain Gallery in Santa Fe

Presenting the works of Randall LaGro and Shelley Muzylowski Allen

SANTA FE, N.M. [July 13, 2012] –Blue Rain Gallery is pleased to announce a two-man show featuring the art of painter Randall LaGro and Glass sculptor Shelley Muzylowski Allen. The show will be on view August 3 – 11, 2012 with an artist reception on Friday, August 3rd from 5 – 7pm.

The paintings of Randall LaGro can best be summed up with one word, process. His deeply passionate, sometimes somber, sometimes iconic paintings are more a part of the artist’s subconscious, channeled only by the process of painting. For LaGro the key is “being open” to whatever direction a painting may take, and the length of time needed to create it. Sanding back and building up layers of paint, LaGro creates a pool of deep where images slowly rise to the surface under the viewer’s steadied gaze. Often using antique printing blocks, lace, or tactile patterned objects, the artist creates impressions in the paint, further adding texture and curiosity to the work. LaGro’s newest suite of paintings are a continuation of his painterly practice, ripe with dream-like figurative imagery, mystery, and wonder.

With precision and personality, Shelley Muzylowski Allen creates gestural animal forms in glass—most notably horses—that explore surface texture, color, and light. Her works are further enhanced by the incorporation of horse hair, leather, twine, concrete, and steel—materials that add tactility and create an element of play and tension with the glass. Allen is one of only a small group of contemporary glass artists that hot sculpt with glass in this manner, pushing the medium to its aching limits in order to achieve her desired form. The end result is figurative glass sculpture that gives the visual impression of ceramics upon first glance, yet holds the translucent properties of glass in sparing and deliberate ways.

Both veteran artists of Blue Rain Gallery, this show is sure to attract a serious crowd. Do not miss an opportunity to celebrate the newest works by Randall LaGro and Shelley Muzylowski Allen!
